And a Splendid Time Was Had By All

At the iconic Santa Barbara Arlington Theatre, Jack McCoy premiered his latest film A Deeper Shade Of Blue to a large crowd of surfers and non surfers alike Tuesday night February 1.

Billed as not a surf movie, rather a film about surfing, everyone was drawn into the story from the very beginning. Starting with one of the most amazing surfing shots every recorded, an ultra slow motion extreme wide shot of one surfers ride from take off to ending at Tahiti’s infamous Teahupoo the audience sat in stunned silence at the spectacle of a ride photographed like never before. The narration says, “as you ride a wave to it’s final thrilling gasp, the waves spirit enters you and ‘it makes you feel good". “You could hear the audience of surfers mummer approval of the words and the images."

From that moment on you were hooked into a journey of past present and future. As one surfer described it “I was stunned by the story, the visuals, the surfing, all the old footage/pictures/images, the sequencing, the music, the narration and the overall spirit of the film... just fantastic?”

Adding a very special flavor to the night were legendary elders of the surfing tribe who only come out for the finest of productions. They were not disappointed. Bruce Brown, The Aaberg Brothers, Tom Morey, Miki Munoz, Jerico Popular and Santa Barbaras own Renny Yater.

Members of the cast rode the red carpet with the boards they rode in the film. Derek Hynd came with his finless creation as well as Classic Hawaiian Terry Chung brought his futuristic hydro file board. Kathy Kohnnor aka "Gidget” brought one of her old Malibu boards and the Marshall Brothers were in fine form with matching suits and aloha shirts. They also provided a heavy hooting section up front that gave the night a real traditional flavor of what it was like to be at a real surf movie.

Other luminaries included Triple Crown Director Randy Rarick, former world champs Shaun Tomson, and PT, as well as Foo Fighter.
